The case for Online Learning Modules and Resources

There is a growing case for taking training out the office and boardroom to online screen learning. Large corporates with a national chain of offices, international businesses, companies that rely on outsourcing and on contractors, as well as remote team leaders, simply cannot practically train face-to-face. Online training modules provide a host of additional benefits for both staff and management:

  • Teams can congregate across time zones
  • Courses can be tailored to a demographic or workforce
  • Courses can be shared on demand and distributed at will
  • Online training fosters Q & A sessions and discussion
  • People can learn at their own pace and revisit training modules
  • Online training fosters hybrid working models and outside collaboration
  • Modules are cost-effective, reusable, and adaptable

Online learning and the Fifth Industrial Revolution

A study in ScienceDirect aptly points out that ‘in both the 4IR and 5IR, technologies in the digital, physical, and biological realms are merging. But an emphasis on how those mergers can enhance the wellbeing of humanity is unique to the 5IR and, in turn, is creating fundamental shifts in service value creation, extraction, exchange, and distribution for all stakeholders.’ Read more here.

The challenge in this environment is how companies can motivate management and employees as machines become better at mimicking human strengths. It’s already becoming clear that management will need training on dealing with these new types of relationships.

The recognition that staff – whether they be employees, freelancers or long-term contractors – now need to be considered as ‘stakeholders’ if a company is to thrive and operate efficiently – means ongoing, broad-based, tailored and flexible training will be an essential ingredient in the 4IR/5IR world.

Technical communicators and the Fifth Industrial Revolution

Technical communicators will be at the forefront of the implementation of these changes, but also top of the list of crucial staff who need the training and skills to make the 4IR and 5IR realisable.

We’d love to hear about your experiences in Technical Communication in the age of AI, and also what skills you’re looking to train up in. Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
