Part 5 in a series of 5

In this five-part series, Firehead takes a look Frontier AI and the impact it is having on technical communicators’ roles and the future labour market for digital communication

The Flip Side of Automation Anxiety:
an Explosion in Frontier AI Jobs

Under the heading ‘Critical Uncertainties’ in the UK Gov report are what can only be regarded as uplifting statements:

‘The current Frontier AI market is dominated by a small number of private-sector organisations,
largely releasing closed-access models… Making a model accessible to many developers, or users…
also dramatically increases the actors in scope for any regulatory approach.’

‘In the near future, the development of Frontier AI models is highly likely to be carried out by a select few companies… These include OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Meta.
A few others without public Frontier AI, but with talent and significant R&D budgets, are likely to enter the market in the next 18 months. This could include Amazon and Apple…’

The growth in demand for AI-ready digital content specialists means the future of our sector is bright. The automation that will inevitably lead to job losses in unskilled sectors will be offset by a huge growth in the frontier AI workforce; its research, implementation, regulation, explanation, and user-interface design.

Think of the proliferation of opportunities through teaching and academia, healthcare, biotech and ‘smart agriculture’, banking, gaming and the metaverse. Think of how and where you would like to plug into the most exciting era for the technology workforce ever.

Firehead is incredibly optimistic about the future of digital and technical communicators and offers individuals and corporates the opportunity to upskill NOW to take advantage of these quantum shifts in the digital revolutions.
