The Top Five Most-in-Demand Technical Skills in 2023

In this five-part series, Firehead takes a look at the new skills-based hiring trend – what it is, why it’s gaining ground, and how it effects technical communication.

Skills-based hiring is particularly important for IT recruitment, as it’s a key industry. There’s nowhere to hide if a candidate doesn’t have the technical skills that they claim.

The good news is that in 2023, the global IT sector reported the most positive hiring outlook of any industry sector. Technical communication often straddles sectors and industries in its applications, but for the sake of hiring analytics, any good IT news is positive news for techcomm demand.

The Top Five Most-in-Demand Technical Skills in 2023

  1. Data Science
  2. Cybersecurity
  3. UX Design
  4. Digital Marketing
  5. Artificial Intelligence

Of course, all of these roles have become multidisciplinary: a technical communicator may fall in any category and need to interpret data, optimise results using AI, incorporate cybersecurity safeguards, make the user experience intuitive, and ensure the final product is readily marketable according to a new Vervoe report on technical skills-based hiring practices.

As a result, technical communicators need to be multidisciplinary themselves and broaden what were previously very narrow and focused skillsets.

The Firehead Training Academy provides employers, employees, and contractors in technical communication fields access to a broad range of upskilling courses. We can also develop tailored training courses to ensure your business finds, retains and maximises the potential of your digital communication staff and content developers.
