Part 4 of 5

In this five-part series, Firehead takes a look at the new skills-based hiring trend – what it is, why it’s gaining ground, and how it effects technical communication.

Generational Challenges in Technical Communication Training

Staff development and retention are fundamental to successful organisations. Where do employers spend most money and effort? The answer seems to depend on age and demographic for the type of recruiting, upskilling, and reskilling they choose.

While the top driver of workplace productivity is professional development, 28% of employers recognise that Gen Zs, in particular, need upskilling, while 27%, for example, recognise that Millennials need better engagement skills.

While Gen Zs now represent the largest sector of society entering the IT workforce, overall upskilling is the greatest HR priority, if productivity targets are to be reached.

Nowadays, around 80% of employers are prioritising skills over degrees as a metric for success. However, the ones who have removed degree requirements are adding more specific requirements for “soft skills” in their job postings. They are looking at a wider picture of skills, as a matrix, If you will, instead of counting on a degree to provide a full picture of how the applicant can perform in the new workplace.

If we consider technical skills to be ‘hard skills’, then soft skills such as communication, collaboration, leadership, and emotional intelligence play a vital role in a candidate’s overall workplace effectiveness. Employers understand that a candidate’s ability to work well with others, adapt to different team dynamics, and effectively communicate ideas can greatly impact their performance and contribution to the organisation.

If the IT sector represents the highest global workforce demand and Gen Zs represent its largest labour pool, then the need for upskilling is on a steep climb for the foreseeable future.

The Firehead Training Academy provides employers, employees, and contractors in technical communication fields access to a broad range of upskilling courses. We can also develop tailored training courses to ensure your business finds, retains and maximises the potential of your digital communication staff and content developers.
