Content strategy must-sees at SXSW Interactive 2011

SXSW 2010

For the last two years I’ve attended the exhausting, entertaining and expert-filled SXSW Interactive web festival in Austin, Texas.

Last year was a breakthrough year for content strategy, which landed firmly on the SXSW radar – not least because of Kristina Halvorson’s rallying talk Content Strategy FTW! and Margot Bloomstein’s very successful marketing strategy of handing out cookies to her audience in Content Strategy: What’s In It For You? (which filled the backchannel with envious tweets).

So what’s on the content strategy agenda this year? And if you’re going to SXSW 2011, which kicks off this Friday (11 March) then what should you see and how can you make sure you see it? Looking through the schedule, these SXSW sessions look worth checking out:

Friday March 11

Not My Job: The Ultimate Content Strategy Smackdown
A ‘Jerry Springer-style’ panel session bashing out who should be in charge of your content and the joys of cross-channel content strategy. A marketer, CMS person, UX designer and an SME are brought together to discuss. Presenters include Kristina Halvorson and Rahel Bailie.

Saturday March 12

Brave New World: Debating Brands’ Role as Publishers
How do brands establish credibility now that they are their own content curators and publishers? Content marketer Joe Pulizzi and others discuss the new lie of the land and the increasingly blurred line between the role of marketer and publisher.

Sunday March 13

App Savvy – Think First, Code LaterA workshop looking at app and product strategy: what devices should be targeted; which category provides the best opportunity for success; how much will this app cost; and how will these answers impact on the actual development process.

Monday March 14

Creation, Curation, and the Ethics of Content StrategyMargot Bloomstein looks at the dark side of content strategy pitfalls and the ethical implications. But, the big question is, will there be cookies?

Avoiding the 11th Hour Sh*stormKaren McGrane on how to plan for useful, usable content earlier in the website process to avoid a mess of content issues come deadline day.

Tuesday March 15

Content Strategists / Producers Meet UpSXSW is renowned for its parties so don’t miss this networking opportunity and chance to join other content strategy types over a drink. Last year’s one in the Luscious Pearl bar was really useful for asking and answering those niggling content questions.

Bonus tip

One tip for newbies is, if there is a panel or talk that you really want to see, consider cutting out of the session before it to make sure you get in. Some rooms at the Austin Convention Center are quite limited on numbers and there is nothing worse than queuing for 20 minutes only to be turned away at the door.
