Part 3 in a series of 5

In this five-part series, Firehead takes a look Frontier AI and the impact it is having on technical communicators’ roles and the future labour market for digital communication

The Advent of the Digital Communication Banker?

The Times (of London) reports that the Bank of England is examining the financial stability risks posed by AI and machine learning and asking regulators to expand their remit to include technology, so that the AI used in algorithmic trading can be better understood…‘senior managers must take steps to ensure what comes out of the black box is actually reasonable.’

Although Goldman Sachs suggested that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs in the US and Europe, they may be failing to grasp the flip side of the coin. If we take the banking sector, a huge cohort of digital compliance specialists, programming regulators, trading floor quants, and digital communicators will be needed to translate the AI into quantifiable risk-reward decisions, plain language boardroom discussions, stakeholder reports, and trading interfaces.

Banking has always been one of the highest-paid sectors and has always required technical support. The demand for AI-trained technology staff may be set to explode with the advent of the ‘Digital Communication Banker’, when ‘regulators’, who were traditionally a far-removed-from-the-office policing agent, become an in-house digital compliance taskforce led by technical communicators.

Firehead’s advice: stay nimble, stay trained, expand your skillsets, pump up your CV with

training-course-completion certificates and demonstrate a good understanding of every discipline within the digital communication sector.

Dump any ‘imposter syndrome’ thoughts and forget about stock trading kudos and commodity jargon; the new banking higher earners may well be the technology enablers who can talk frontier AI and truly leverage the markets.

Firehead is incredibly optimistic about the future of digital and technical communicators and offers individuals and corporates the opportunity to upskill NOW to take advantage of these quantum shifts in the digital revolutions.
