Part 3 of 5
In this five-part series, Firehead takes a look at the new skills-based hiring trend – what it is, why it’s gaining ground, and how it effects technical communication.
Remote Work Trends and Technical Communication
Whilst remote work unlocks a global talent pool, workforce definitions have blurred.
You’ve probably already heard a lot about the talent shortage and organisations struggling to find skilled workers (77% of organisations reported that they are struggling to find skilled talent; the number rises to 78% in IT).
Digital communication services reported 66% of corporates expressed a strong demand for skilled workers. That industry trend is global, and remarkably, the statistics for the demand for permanent and temporary workers in digital and technical communication roles is identical at 42%.
The numbers indicate that hybrid workforces are now blurring traditional employment definitions; the terms ‘employee’, ‘permanent’, ‘temporary’, ‘freelancer’, ‘gig worker’ and ‘contractor’ are becoming homogenous in corporate productivity strategies.
Emphasis on Transferable and Hybrid Skills
In response to the rapid pace of technological advancements and shifting job market demands, skills-based hiring has shifted its focus to include transferable and hybrid skills. Transferable skills are those abilities that can be applied across different industries or job roles, such as communication, problem-solving, or critical thinking. Workers with these skills can adapt and thrive in diverse work environments.
Additionally, hybrid skills, which involve a combination of technical and soft skills, are gaining prominence. With many disciplines converging, and the need for multidimensional expertise, candidates who have a mix of technical proficiency and interpersonal abilities are highly sought after. Employers recognise the value of workers who can bridge the gap between different areas of specialisation and collaborate effectively across teams.
Continuous Training and Upskilling is a Shared Responsibility
The rapid pace of technology and evolving job requirements have created a focus on continuous learning and adaptability in skills-based hiring. Employers are seeking candidates who demonstrate a growth mindset and a willingness to learn and acquire new skills.
In 2023, organisations are placing greater emphasis on candidates’ potential for growth and their ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
This shift includes evaluating their capacity to learn new technologies, adapt to different work methodologies, and quickly upskill or reskill when required. Employers are actively seeking workers who show curiosity, agility, and a proactive approach to their own professional development. The selection process isn’t based on aptitude alone, but on a candidate’s willingness to invest in their personal development through independent upskilling programmes.
